Performance Score
Holcim says it is aiming for "carbon neutrality" by 2050 with a strong dependence on carbon capture and storage (CCUS) technologies, which represent 44% of the levers contributing to its strategy to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions. In terms of decarbonization targets for scope 3, the group is increasing its scope coverage from 31% in 2023 to around 80% this year, and this target is SBTi certified by 2030. The action plan is detailed with the contribution of the actions to the 2050 reduction targets for scopes 1 and 2 but lacks costing for scope 3. Regarding investments, nearly 60% of the 2023-2032 CAPEX plan is focused on CCUS technologies, and this share has increased between 2023 and 2024 at the expense of CAPEX for clean energy and decarbonization.
Narrative Score
Overall, Holcim has understood that the climate is a profoundly material subject and has put in place multiple actions to manage it. Unfortunately, Holcim's actions appear to be aimed at minimizing costs to continue its business as usual. The company has not given itself the opportunity to broaden the scope of its business model redefinition, for example by considering itself a building materials company rather than a cement company. Significant efforts seem to have been made in Holcim's climate plan and the level of reporting is positive. The main strengths of the climate plan are the science-based targets, the high share of the R&D budget dedicated to low-carbon technologies, the company's climate governance, the transparency of political commitment and the alignment with positions in favour of climate protection.
Trend score
Holcim is implementing a number of relevant decarbonisation actions, but its transition plan remains incomplete.
