Although Shell has announced an ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and a new medium-term target has been set on part of its scope 3 in absolute terms, it does not seem to be taking the turn of a real transition to develop sustainable activities and transform the core of its business model in order to meet the objectives it has set for itself. The company is not transparent about how much the reduction actually represents compared to offsetting and capturing emissions. The company also does not clearly communicate on the investments specifically dedicated to each low-carbon energy source between now and 2030, nor on the targeted energy mix.

Overall, Shell's climate plan is detailed, but no measurable action is announced for 2050. The company has published a document on its energy transition strategy in which it envisages short-term actions based on the avoidance, reduction and compensation of greenhouse gas emissions. It has set specific targets to reduce approximately half of its Scope 3 emissions, which account for the bulk of its total carbon footprint, in absolute terms. In addition, Shell has achieved its previous targets for reducing its net carbon intensity by considering the use of carbon credits.
Trend score
Shell is still active in the exploration and exploitation of fossil fuels and has not committed to ending its activities. Its Net Zero ambition for 2050 is questionable given the lack of emissions reductions in recent years and the near absence of any change in its business model for the future.
