Performance Score

AENA has had its medium- and long-term climate targets for 2024 validated by the SBTi. However, the scope of these goals and the information provided by the company is unclear. The 2030 scope 3 targets do not take into account downstream emissions (~85% of total emissions), but they are included in the 2050 target. As for its 2030 action plan, the company is focusing on measures affecting scopes 1 and 2 and on its activities located in Spain. No action has been presented by AENA to credibly achieve its 2050 target of reducing flight-related emissions by 90%.
In addition, AENA's actions are not in line with its main impact on the climate. For example, AENA focuses its actions on the energy efficiency of its buildings and on replacing lighting in airports with LEDs (which represents 3% of total emissions in 2024), while the impact of aircraft is not credibly taken into account (which accounts for about 74% of emissions). AENA mentions a few initiatives to promote sustainable aviation fuels, but they are still in the early stages, with no credible prospect of being able to expand sufficiently and sustainably.
AENA has not yet managed to put in place a credible strategy to develop a business model aligned with a low-carbon world. AENA has not created or developed low-carbon business models. The company's climate strategy is based on the gradual optimization of the current business model. AENA is encouraged to go further in terms of transparency, ambition and credibility of its climate strategy.

Narrative Score

Past and present actions show that the company has climate ambition when it comes to its scope 1 and 2 emissions, but lacks ambition and credibility for scope 3 emissions (97% of its total emissions). AENA is committed to achieving "net neutrality" and "climate neutrality" on different timelines, but does not give a definition of what this means or the difference between these two concepts from the company's point of view.

Trend score

AENA does not have a real transition plan. Some processes are underway, but AENA still seems to lack commitment to climate issues.
