Performance Score
Although Unilever announces its ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2039, this excludes emissions related to the indirect use of products (47%). However, the company has set specific targets for 2030 and has developed a detailed plan to achieve them by then. These targets, which are currently being validated by an external third party for scope 3, do not include 1/3 of the scope calculated on the basis of the carbon neutrality ambition. In addition, the investments associated with the objectives set seem insufficient to effect a significant change in the business model. All of these elements, combined with the reduction in the sustainability criteria taken into account in the long-term variable remuneration of executives, raises questions about the company's real desire to decarbonize all of its activities.
Narrative Score
Unilever has clear goals and a detailed transition plan to achieve them. Unilever has identified the levers and quantified the actions to achieve its objectives by 2030 but not beyond. Specifically, the company describes some interventions on its current products as well as certain changes in business models.
Trend score
The transition plan and climate scenario tests are considered low-carbon aligned according to the ACT methodology. However, Unilever will need to anticipate significant changes in its business models and products in order to achieve its objectives
